When flying to the M4 event (3142 Divide Road, Mountain City, TN), here are the best airport options and driving routes:

Tri-Cities Airport

The closest and most convenient commercial airport, a full-service regional airport in Blountville, TN. Airlines include Allegiant, American, and Delta, offering nonstop flights to major hubs like Atlanta and Charlotte.

  • Distance/Time: Approximately 48 miles, a drive of about 1 hour and 10 minutes.
  • Driving Route: The most direct route involves winding roads, but a popular option is taking I-81 N to US-11 N/US-58 E in Washington County, then following US-58 E to TN-91 and turning south towards Mountain City. This route avoids some of the more scenic but curvier mountain roads.

Asheville Regional Airport

  • Distance/Time: The driving distance is about 106 miles, and the drive takes approximately 2 hours and 25 minutes.
  • Driving Route: Take I-26 E toward Hendersonville, then follow I-40 W towards Waynesville/Sylva. From there, you’ll take US 23/74 W and then connect to roads leading into Mountain City.
  • The drive from Asheville to Mountain City for the 2026 M4 event takes you through the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, offering some of the most spectacular vistas in the eastern United States

Charlotte Douglas International Airport

Overview: As a major international hub, CLT offers the most flight options from across the U.S. and potentially more competitive pricing.

  • Distance/Time: The distance is around 111 miles, with a driving time of approximately 3 hours.
  • Driving Route: Take I-85 S to SC 11, then turn right onto Hwy 130/NC 281 N. You’ll eventually connect to local routes leading to Mountain City.

The drive from Asheville to Mountain City for the 2026 M4 event takes you through the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, offering some of the most spectacular vistas in the eastern United States

Primary Scenic Route

Interstate 26 Scenic Highway: The section of I-26 north of Asheville (towards Tennessee) is the only interstate in North Carolina designated as a Scenic Byway.

The Ascent: You will climb to Buckner Gap, which at nearly 5,000 feet is the highest elevation on any interstate in North Carolina.

The Views: Scenic overlooks offer sweeping views of the Madison County landscape, including Mount Mitchell (the highest peak east of the Mississippi), Black Mountain, and Grandfather Mountain.

Culture: A welcome center at mile marker 3 is built to resemble a mountain farmstead and features exhibits on mountain life.

Blue Ridge Parkway Connection: For a more leisurely and breathtaking drive, you can take the Blue Ridge Parkway north from Asheville towards Grandfather Mountain.

Linn Cove Viaduct: You will encounter this world-famous engineering marvel that curves gracefully around Grandfather Mountain, offering iconic forest and mountain views.

High Altitudes: This route features higher elevations where the air is cooler and the landscape is dominated by dense forests.

Roads and Driving Conditions

Terrain: Expect winding, “serpentine” two-lane roads if you veer off the main interstates onto local highways like US-421 or US-19E. These routes pass through “quintessential small towns” such as Weaverville.

Hazards: Mountain roads can be narrow with steep inclines and sharp switchbacks.

Weather: While late July 2026 should offer pleasant summer weather, high-altitude sections can experience sudden storms or heavy winds, which occasionally cause downed trees that block routes.

Key Stops and Landmarks
