Intermediate Contra Partner Play

(an afternoon specialty workshop) with Zane Potorti. Come explore how to have even more fun contra dancing! In this workshop we will focus on performing intricate flourishes, building rapport with partners, and making dances playful. Moderate experience with contra, or contra basics with moderate experience partner dancing, recommended.

Contra Dance Basics

Leading the Contra Basics workshop will be Warren Doyle.  Warren has over 50 years of experience as an educator, contra dancer, dance instructor/caller and dance event organizer.  He is the Founder and Co-Director (with Terry) of the Appalachian Folk School. To help maintain, and improve, an individual’s overall dancing skill level by discussing, and demonstrating:

  • Importance of listening, timing and grace (gentle strength) in dancing
  • Barriers common to smooth and joyful movement
  • Challenges of creative, individual movement within the collective structureReasons why people contra dance
  • Contra dance history

The class/workshop will be relaxed but meaningful with a healthy balance of discussion and dancing.  Not only are beginners welcome, but also experienced dancers who wish for more in-depth training in the art of contra dance.

Participants are encouraged to attend the entire four sessions, which will be taught sequentially.

Adults and children (over 10 y.o.) are welcome!
